Mekhi Tyree

Mekhi Tyree is a skilled oboist, dedicated educator, and experienced administrator from Lynchburg, VA currently pursuing a Master of Music in Oboe Performance at the University of Delaware School of Music.

From an early age, Mekhi displayed a keen interest in music, inspired by watching various movie musicals and orchestral performances with his grandmother. He began his musical journey with the violin at 9 years old, picking up cello in middle school and eventually joining band to play bass clarinet, all of which ultimately led him to begin playing the oboe at age 12.

Mekhi earned his Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from James Madison University, where he studied under Dr. Jeanette Zyko. During his time at JMU, he excelled in numerous roles within the School of Music community. He served as a drum major for the Marching Royal Dukes, worked closely with music admissions, and actively participated in diverse musical ensembles and clubs such as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the JMU Overtones coed A Cappella group.

Driven by a passion for music, Mekhi is currently obtaining an MM in Oboe Performance studying with Dr. Erin Banholzer. His graduate studies have provided him with extensive experience in performing, teaching (privately and undergraduate instrumental methods courses) and working as a graduate assistant in the School of Music office of Recruitment and Admissions.

Mekhi Tyree’s diverse experience and unwavering dedication to music education and performance have established him as a beacon for his colleagues and students. He aims to continue inspiring through his teaching, administrative roles, and performances.
